Bikes on Buses Trains and Ferries

AC Transit bus with bikeBicycles are allowed on all Bay Area ferries and nearly all rail lines. Exceptions are San Francisco Muni Metro, historic streetcars and cable cars.

Nearly all Bay Area public transit buses are equipped with bicycle racks. Exceptions are a number of San Francisco Muni bus routes, AC Transit small bus vans and certain routes of other transit operators.

Listed below are Bay Area public transit agencies with direct links to their bicycle information Web pages:

AC Transit

Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry:
Bikes allowed on board - bicycle racks available.

Alameda/Oakland Ferry Service

Altamont Commuter Express
Passengers with bicycles should enter the train car through doors marked with a bicycle emblem. Store your bicycle in one of the spaces provided at the end of each train car. Secure your bicycle's front and back wheels with the Velcro straps. ACE is not responsible for stolen, lost or damaged bicycles.

American Canyon Transit:
A bike rack is mounted on the front of one of the two buses. Please call ahead to make sure the bus with the bike rack is the bus that is in operation on the day of your trip. (Call 511, say "Public Transportation", then "Transit Agencies" and then "American Canyon Transit" to speak to an operator.)

Amtrak California/Capitol Corridor
All 14 of the Capital Corridor 1995-era cab cars have been retrofitted and now hold seven bicycle racks as opposed to three. In addition, five 2002-era cab cars can now accommodate 13 bicycles each.

Angel Island / Tiburon Ferry

BART

BART car retrofitting project:
In an effort to increase railcar passenger carrying capacity, improve door area circulation, and accommodate bicycles, luggage, strollers, and such, BART is modifying railcars by removing and/or changing seating configurations. 41 of 80 railcars have been completed as of January 2010. Two additional cars are expected to be retrofitted each month until all 80 cars are completed.

Calistoga Handy Van - shuttle:
Bikes can not be accommodated on the Calistoga Handy Van shuttles at this time.

Caltrain

County Connection:
Bike racks are mounted on all County Connection buses. The racks have capacity for two bicycles at a time, so space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dumbarton Express

Fairfield Suisun Transit

Golden Gate Transit:

Healdsburg Transit:
Bikes can not be accommodated on the Healdsburg Transit buses at this time.

Marin Transit Community Shuttle:
Bike racks are mounted on the front of all shuttles. All shuttles have at racks that accommodate two bicycles, and some have racks that accommodate three bicycles. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Napa Downtown Trolley:
Bicycles can not be accommodated on the trollies.

Napa Vine:
Bike racks are mounted on the front of all Napa Vine buses. The racks have capacity for two bicycles at a time, so space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. No bicycles are allowed on-board. Bicycles can not be accommodated on the Napa Downtown Trolley.

Petaluma Transit:
All buses are equipped with bicycle racks

St. Helena Vine:
Bike racks are mounted on the front of all Napa Vine buses. The racks have capacity for two bicycles at a time, so space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. No bicycles are allowed on-board.

TriDelta Transit

Union City Transit:
Bike racks are mounted on all Union City Transit buses. The racks have capacity for two bicycles at a time, so space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Vacaville City Coach:
Bike racks are mounted on all Vacaville City Coach buses. The racks have capacity for two bicycles at a time, so space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Vallejo Transit:

  • Buses:
    Bikes are allowed on all Vallejo buses. Local buses have bicycle racks on the front of the buses. The regional buses have luggage compartments where bicycles can be stored while riding.
  • Baylink Ferry


VTA (Valley Transportation Authority)

VINE (Napa Valley):
All buses have bike racks with space for two bicycles. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

West Marin Stagecoach:
Bike racks are mounted on the front of all Stagecoach buses. All buses have at racks that accommodate two bicycles, and some have racks that accommodate three bicycles. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

WestCAT

WHEELS (LAVTA)

Yountville Shuttle:
Bike racks are mounted on the front of all Yountville Shuttle buses. The racks have capacity for two bicycles at a time, so space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
